    Coding, the process of giving a digital device an instruction or set of instructions to complete an operation, is a language of the future.

    As part of British Science Week, the Programming for Primaries event is trying to get schools to do more to get their pupils enjoying coding, and is spreading the message that Year 8 is too late to get engaged in coding.

    At the Stephen Perse Foundation, we are coding on a daily basis from the age of three and in all elements of school life – from maths to history and everything in between.

    Year One create portraits - with adjectives!

    In Year One we started the academic year deciding what we want to put up on our walls.

    We agreed to draw portraits of ourselves and put them on the art gallery area. This will help us introduce ourselves to one another and set the stage for a place of learning that values everyone’s individuality. A list of adjectives that defines each child's personality underlines each portrait. Each of the pupils defined themselves with a few adjectives and wrote it on a caption under their own portrait.

    Zoo animals come out for Year One's assembly

    On the 6th of October Year One had the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and the rest of the pupils.

    Year One did their assembly about Animal Kingdoms. Children designed their own animal masks and sang a song inviting others to go to the zoo with them.

    Then they shared all their knowledge about the Woburn Safari animals reading big posters aloud. We learned lots of new facts about them! They used labels and captions to summarise the information.

  • Madingley Mindfulness

    Madingley Mindfulness

    Year 1 at Madingley has started combining mindfulness in our PSHE lessons. 

    We started talking about how we feel when people do not follow our class rules. We wrote down the first feeling that came to mind when asked the question. Children wrote that they would feel sad, but would still act respectfully.

    This sparked a conversation about resilience. We discussed why it is important to be resilient and think for ourselves and not follow the crowd. Mindfulness listening was introduced to the class to see if this could help us calm down and think about our behaviour. Year 1 thinks that including a mindfulness practice in their life just might make them a little more resilient!
