Every year the 27 January marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) – a day to commemorate the millions of victims of the Holocaust and those killed in genocides around the world. It's also a day to educate younger generations on these events so that they can be inspired to take action and create a safer world for the future.
From attending a virtual day at the zoo to learning about the work of Martin Luther King Jr, here are just a handful of the activities that have been happening both remotely and on-site over the last week.
The boarding house is quieter than usual this term due to lockdown but for those students still present, boarding life is continuing as close to normal as possible.
Our first full week of remote learning has come to an end and although remote learning is no longer a novelty for our staff and pupils it certainly hasn’t become boring! Our staff have once again worked tirelessly to make sure that pupils working from home, as well as key worker children on-site, have been able to carry on with their timetabled lessons as normal. Let’s take a look at some of the great activities and learning that has taken place this week.
Despite the pandemic and the restrictions that this has imposed, Rosemary Tice (Geography and Biology teacher, 1965-1990) and Katie Milne (Junior School teacher, 1979-2006 and then Head of Junior School 2006 - 2019) marked the 140th birthday of the Foundation by organising the delivery of a hyacinth.
In the last week of the Autumn term we finally performed our Year 13 extract of the Autumn term production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman.

Year 8 pupil Theo has been announced as one of the runner ups in the 'Best Community Contributor' category in the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) See Differently Awards 2020.
Many congratulations to five of our year 11 netball team, and 2 of our former pupils now in year 12, who have successfully secured a place in the Mavericks Futures Academy in Cambridge. Also, to another year 11 student who has joined Bedford Mavericks and a year 10 pupil who has joined the Pulse netball franchise.
In the last week of November, our Year 10, 11 and 12 casts gave truly fabulous final performances of their extracts of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. We are so, so proud of all the performers, musicians, crew and creatives who have worked with such enthusiasm throughout this challenging term and who have together achieved such amazing results.
The final performances were an absolute joy to watch!
The Stephen Perse Foundation, a family of leading independent co-educational schools in Cambridge and Saffron Walden, has been recognised in the Sunday Times annual Parent Power awards as the East Anglia Independent Secondary School of the Decade, to be published in full on Sunday, 29th November.
An important part of our Inspire and Guide curriculum for years 10 and 11 is to hear from speakers from varying career paths to share their fascinating careers and life stories, inspiring students to think differently. To continue these sessions during Covid-19, our speakers are now talking to our students virtually.

Students applying to medical, veterinary and dentistry schools now have to participate in multiple interviews at many universities when they are called for an interview. Known as ‘Multiple Mini’s’ (MMI) these normally represent around 10 different tests or stations as part of the interview process, designed to assess a range of skills in everything from dexterity to ethics.
For Remembrance Day, and as part of their ‘Sticks and Stones’ theme, Year 6 were asked to write a poem about what Remembrance or war means to them.
