Celebrating reading across the Foundation on World Book Day 2019

Published on 20/03/19

Students from across the Stephen Perse Foundation enjoyed taking part in a variety of activities on World Book Day, including an author visit from Zeb Soanes and James Mayhew.

World Book Day was a fabulous opportunity for collaboration and activities all focused around reading across the Foundation.

Year 1 at Dame Bradbury's had fun dressing up as characters from their favourite books and sharing lots of book themed activities with their guests - the Year 1 pupils from City and Madingley. Year 2 pupils from Dame B's travelled to Cambridge to join their fellow Year 2 pupils from City and Madingley. They all headed off in search of adventure just like Gaspard the Fox - the star of the new book by Zeb Soanes and James Mayhew.

We were very fortunate to have a visit at both Dame B's and the Junior School by Zeb and James, talking to pupils from Years 2-4. Zeb told us all about the real Gaspard, an urban fox, who visits his home in London and is now quite famous on social media. He also explained how he had used other real animals as inspiration for his quirky characters. James stunned us with his amazing artwork, drawing a picture of Gaspard in front of our very eyes. The children were inspired to create their own stories and illustrations and have enjoyed studying the artwork of James Mayhew.

Costumes were evident all across the Foundation with all sorts of book characters being represented.

The Senior School also celebrated World Book Day with a series of activities. An assembly introduced Years 10 and 11 to the 'worst poet in the world', William McGonagall. There was a literary quiz to test the students knowledge, as well as a spoken word event with students reading their own original work. There was also the launch of a literary contest called 'Rewrite a myth or fairy tale' challenging the students to take these classical tales and put their own spin on them. The results of the contest will be announced at the beginning of the Summer term.
